How to prepare for a Hollywood wax

A ‘Hollywood wax’ – or full Brazilian – removes all the hair from the pubic and genital area. Here’s how you can prepare for it.

Getting a bikini wax is always slightly stressful, but when you’re going the whole way with a Hollywood wax, it’s bound to make you a little worried.

A Hollywood wax is the ultimate bikini waxing method. It is different from a Brazilian wax; in the latter, a little strip or rectangle of hair is retained on the pubic mound, while the rest of the hair (even that between the buttocks) is removed by waxing. But in a Hollywood wax, every last hair in the pubic and genital region is removed. The entire area becomes ‘bald’. The woman is then free to wear the skimpiest underwear or bikini bottom without the fear of hair peeking through the clothes.

It is best to leave the Hollywood wax to a professional beautician. Doing it yourself can be tricky, especially since the process uses hot wax. You can even use wax strips, but you might not be able to use them properly to get all the hair, especially between the legs. So it is better to book a salon appointment and entrust the job to a beautician.

But before you go, there are ways to prepare yourself for the Hollywood wax, such that the pain is minimised and there is less after-wax soreness:

Schedule it at least two days before an event. Even if you’re a regular waxer, it is better to give the Hollywood wax at least two days before you go for your holiday, or have a pool party. The skin needs time to relax and recover before you can go for a swim or use any hygiene products in the area.

Make sure the hair is long enough to wax. Normally, wax is okay for hair that is about ¼ inch long. Any shorter, and the wax cannot grip the hair properly and repeated waxing is required. Any longer, and the hair starts to curl and become entangled in the wax, causing more pain when it is pulled off. Don’t worry about overly long hair, though; the beautician will trim it to the right length before commencing the wax.

Exfoliate. Exfoliation is recommended before waxing, so that the dead skin cells and dried sweat is removed. Also, exfoliation slightly separates the hair from the epidermis (the top layer of the skin) so that the hair is removed much easier by waxing. Be sure to exfoliate on the morning of your wax.

Pop a painkiller. Hollywood waxes hurt, so if you are afraid of the pain, just pop a painkiller half an hour before the waxing begins.

Wear clean cotton underwear afterward. Waxing exposes the hair follicles, so it is better to minimise the risk of infection by wearing clean cotton underwear after the wax.
